Philippe Caland Solo Exhibition “in between”

From his earliest days in the film industry, Philippe Caland has showcased his multifaceted talent through various roles as a writer, producer, director, and actor. His creative journey includes serving as a writer and producer on Boxing Helena, and as a producer for films such as Dead Girl, Infinity, and Loved. Philippe has uniquely combined the roles of writer, director, producer, and actor in projects like Hollywood Buddha, Ripple Effect, The Guru and the Gypsy, and Repentance. Over the years, he has collaborated with an array of notable actors including Val Kilmer, Matthew Broderick, Patricia Arquette, Robin Wright, Sean Penn, William Hurt, Virginia Madsen, Minnie Driver, Anthony Mackie, Mike Epps, and Forest Whitaker in many projects.

Building a significant body of work takes a lifetime, with long intervals between projects. During these periods, Caland found creative solace while strolling and biking around Venice Beach, California. Here, life’s drama unfolds daily, offering him endless vignettes of emotion, irony, and conflict reminiscent of his films. With a smartphone camera always at hand, he began capturing these fleeting moments, developing a new lens through which to view the world.

This debut exhibition of his work captured ‘in between’ films reveals that for Philippe, the movie never truly ends. He continues to document life’s ongoing drama as an observer, finding inspiration in everyday spectacles. This collection invites viewers to see the world through his eyes, proving that the art of storytelling extends far beyond the cinema.

Philippe Caland was born in Beirut to a Lebanese mother and a French father. His mother, Huguette Caland, is a world-renowned painter whose next significant solo exhibition will be held at the Reina Sofia in Madrid in 2025. Philippe studied economics at the American University of Paris and Université Jacques Médecin in Nice, while also competing as a swimmer for the French national team.  He moved to the U.S. in the mid-1980s and has lived there ever since.
