Dr. Jaiya John is an internationally recognized author, speaker, poet, spoken word artist, and youth mentor. Jaiya is the founder of Soul Water Rising, a global human mission that has donated thousands of Jaiya’s books in support of social healing, and offers scholarships to displaced and vulnerable youth. He is a former professor of social psychology at Howard University, has authored numerous books, and has spoken to over half a million professionals, adults, and youth worldwide. Jaiya is a National Science Foundation fellow, and holds doctorate and master’s degrees in social psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, with a focus on intergroup relations and identity development. As an undergraduate, he attended Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, and lived in Kathmandu, Nepal, where he studied Tibetan Holistic Medicine through independent research with Tibetan doctors.
During our ceremony & gathering Jaiya will be reading selected poems from his collection of books and unpublished work, bringing to life the spirit of the medicine words. Though it is called a reading, it is more akin to an incantation and prayer. These readings focus on collective freedom and are shaped by each unique audience. They weave a rich cultural fabric, centering Indigenous, marginalized, and dehumanized people and communities. These are remembrance songs, reconnecting us to our Indigenous ancestral ways of gathering and being together. This tour is part of Jaiya’s global Soul Water Rising rehumanizing mission, stirring the soul to remember itself as we cultivate our collective liberation and the end of oppressive systems and ways of life. His work addresses the spiritual, social, psychological, cultural, ancestral, and Indigenous aspects of the human condition in the context of freedom work to heal from historical systemic oppression.
These gatherings will feature audience interaction through questions and conversation. The healing experience includes Aftercare, where attendees can connect with Jaiya for sacred listening, embraces, tears and laughter, photos, and book collection sales and signing.
