In Perfect Conditions to Flourish, interdisciplinary artist Carla Rebelo presents a new video and photography installation that turns the garden into a metaphor for the human condition—a cultivated space where order and chaos, control and wildness, meet.
The work explores how gardens reflect our evolving relationship with the natural world. Once symbols of beauty and power, they now hold the potential to become sites of transformation, rest, and resistance. Inspired by AmĂlcar Cabral’s idea of “meteorisation” — the continuous erosion and renewal of soil as a metaphor for liberation — Rebelo’s project envisions freedom not as a fixed state, but as an ever-evolving process of becoming.
Curated by Cristina Reid, the exhibition forms part of the Loop Video Art Festival 2026, inviting viewers to reflect on cycles of growth and decay, both ecological and personal. Through light, texture, and movement, Rebelo invites us to question what it means to truly flourish—in a world where even nature must adapt.
