Jan Schüler – German Landscapes

In the series “Deutsche Landschaft” (“German Landscape”), arising since 2017, Schüler finds his motives in cities like Dresden and Frankfurt, both centers of German romanticism, in Weimar, where the first German repulic was founded, in Düsseldorf or Berlin, focussing on historical dates and central places in history. With “Berlin” arises a series representing historical events like the collapse of the Third Reich, the division of the former capital, the building of the wall and scenes of reunification in their visual efect on the collective memory. Aside from that the series “Deutsche Landschaft” includes paintings of concentration camp memorials like Buchenwald, Flossenbürg or Bergen-Belsen.

The German painter Jan Schüler studied Communications Design and Fine Arts. Schüler is one of the most representative artists of the new European figuration. His portraits allow us to enter scenes of everyday life, where the characters challenge us with their gaze. However, this artist’s landscapes are more austere and convey serenity. Schüler was awarded the First Prize for Visual Arts in Düsseldorf in 1996 and in 2010 he received the Miraculum Lucis Prize. From 1985 to 1993 he studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Rissa and as a master’s student with Fritz Schwegler. During his studies, Schüler also performed as a singer together with Justus Köhncke.
