NUSOS Exhibition by Ester Chacón Ávila

Ester Chacón Ávila’s work materializes in tapestries, where anthropomorphic characters appear made with knots and braids, created without a systematic metric. She works with color, highlighting shades of red, blue, yellow, light ocher and black. Ester uses natural and synthetic fiber, cords, threads, wool, hemp, sisal, raffia, silk or jute. Her works are monumental woven sculptures that articulate postures, attitudes and corporeal gestures. She has also made paintings on paper with mixed techniques, ceramics, jewelry, fabric design and woven objects.

Esther Chacón Ávila was born in Santiago de Chile, in 1936, where she studied architecture. In the effervescent 60s she settled in New York, where her creativity was influenced by the innovative avant-gardes of that time, reflected in her extensive textile design work for major firms. In post-68 Paris, she became an internationally recognized artist with her knotted sculptures.

In 2004 Ester moved to Barcelona. She is interested in different materials; nylon, ropes and synthetic fibers, gold or silver threads. Shee introduced rigid structures, frames or volumes made of metal rods, which serve as skeletons for her knotted sculptures, restricting the dimensions. Ester made several series of sculptures in patinated bronze of which she keeps the originals on strings, as well as several collections of jewelry and miniatures made with threads of different materials and cast in gold or silver.
