October 1, 2021 - April 2, 2022

visual communication exhibition barcelona

Barcelona Design Museum presents the exhibition “Do you design or work? The new visual communication. 1980-2003”. The exhibition, curated by Raquel Pelta, offers a journey through the history of graphic design in Catalonia and Spain that began in the eighties, with the cultural explosion and the modernization of institutions and companies that led to the arrival of democracy, until the 2003, when the Year of Design is celebrated and new practices appear in the discipline. The new permanent exhibition shows how graphic design has explained the great political and social transformations over more than two decades.

A panoramic exhibition: from the «boom» of graphic design to audiovisual graphics.

The exhibition shows the work of almost two hundred professionals with a selection of some six hundred pieces that are part of the Museum’s Graphic Design Collection and that are representative of a time of extraordinary vitality, an explosion of popular culture and new professional challenges. From the “boom” of the 80s that brought greater visibility of designers to the consolidation of the profession in the 90s with the celebration of Barcelona’92 and the arrival of the Macintosh to end, in the early 2000s, with the emergence of new perspectives and specialties.

The sample includes a great variety of works: institutional commissions, corporate images, graphic campaigns of major events, editorial works and social graphics; as well as a great typology of formats: books, magazines, posters, album covers, brochures, flyers, packaging, and now also web pages, interactive or audiovisual graphics, among others.

We will find some of the most prominent representatives of the period, names like Enric Satué, America Sanchez, Oscar Mariné, Mariscal, Peret, Pati Núñez, Juan Gatti, José María Cruz Novillo, Yves Zimmermann, Nacho Lavernia Pilar Villuendas, Claret Serrahima, Paco Bascuñán , Isidro Ferrer, Enric Aguilera; Eumografic, Grafica, BaseBCN, Mucho, Suma or Vasava studies, among many others.

A collection of the Design Museum, Barcelona’s new cultural heritage

The Design Museum as a reference center in the study and preservation of graphic design continues with ¿Diseñas o trabajo? to the exhibition Graphic design: from trade to profession (1940-1980), which opened the Museum and which focused on the work of the pioneers of the discipline. Now, with this new semi-permanent exhibition and continuing with the desire to make graphic design available to the city as a cultural heritage, works are shown that, due to their formal language, their power of communication and because they belong to the collective memory, allow us to follow the currents and concepts that marked the evolution of graphic design for more than two decades. A period shaken by the influence of postmodern thought that led to a new way of understanding design.
