Isabel Rabassa – Grey Matter

February 7 @ 11:00 am - March 10 @ 8:00 pm

Isabel Rabassa Grey Matter

Isabel Rabassa on Grey Matter:

A series of studies have implied that emotion plays a role at various specific stages of our memory (encoding and consolidating it). Grey matter it’s a part of the brain that contains most of the brain’s neuronal cell bodies. The grey matter includes regions of the brain involved in muscle control, and sensory perception such as seeing and hearing, memory, emotions, speech, decision making, and self-control.

This concept fascinates me because it wraps on everything that I work with, and intend to produce or create with my painting.

I paint from memory images that come to my mind like archives. Even though these first flashes lack emotion, when it’s time to go deep into it, the meaning surrounding the memories has changed.  I choose how to perceive them and what to paint over those memories. Ignoring the past is not an option. For me the only way is to confront it through my painting and to transform it along the creative process. In this way, the emotional link to the memories has a new shape, tone, texture. And it’s easier to live with them.

So, do emotions influence our memory? Or is our memory influenced by our emotions?

“Every act of perception is, to some degree , an act of creation, and every act of memory is to some degree an act of imagination.” – Oliver Sacks

The inauguration takes place at Artevistas Gallery in the Gothic Quarter on Thursday February 7th from 7-10pm.
